Adapted Physical Education Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

This certificate in (Adapted Physical Education) APE is designed as a one-year program to provide for licensed and paraprofessional teachers with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to deliver individualized, inclusive programs for children and adolescents with special needs. The certificate program is designed to prepare candidates for taking the National Certificate in Adapted Physical Exam. APE teachers work to provide expert physical education for students which require adapted education to fulfil their state and federally required education expectations. Illinois state policy requires that physical education be executed for all individuals capable of participation base on their individual needs. The ability to take PE as a student is not a luxury, it is required to be available by law!
The following outline lists the 15 credits for the certificate including the course names and descriptions:
- PE 5035 - Seminar in Motor Development and Control (3 credit hours) WEB Fall Semester
- Course Description: Findings on motor behavior, motor control, and motor development with emphases on growth patterns, adaptability, and specificity. Factors impacting motor and sensory abilities with implications for adapted physical education.
- PE 5065 - Physical education for individuals with special needs (3 credit hours) WEB Fall Semester
- Course Description: Introduction to adapted physical activity across school, community, and clinical settings. Curricular and teaching strategies for physical education and sport/recreation programs.
- PE 5145 - Applied Behavior Analysis (3 credit hours) WEB Spring Semester
- Course Description: Emphasis on the science in which procedures derived from the principles of behavior are systematically applied to improve socially significant behavior to a meaningful degree among those with disabilities.
- PE 5075 - Programming and Assessment for Severe Physical Impairments (3 credit hours) WEB Spring Semester
- Course Description: Program planning in adapted physical education and application of psychomotor testing procedures using current standard assessment tools
- PE 5085 - Advanced Study in Adapted Physical Education (3 credit hours) WEB Summer Semester
- Course Description: Examination of factors, including litigation, legislation, and societal attitudes, influencing the successful inclusion in physical education and sport of children and adults with and without disabilities.
