The Bachelor of Arts in English with the teaching option prepares students for a career in teaching English in secondary settings. Students benefit from the expertise of journalists, published authors, and scholars of American, British, and African American literature. Students are required to become involved in professional organizations and encouraged to remain involved after graduation. Acceptance to the College of Education is required before registration in any professional education courses. Students who successfully complete the program will graduate licensed to teach in the State of Illinois with a Professional Educator License (PEL) for grades 9-12.

General Requirements (24 credit hrs) - Humanities/Fine Arts (9 hrs); at least 3 hrs Humanities and 3 hrs Fine Arts
- Social Sciences (9 hrs); in at least two different disciplines
- Natural Sciences (6 hrs); 3 hrs Physical Science and 3 hrs Life Sciences, one of which must be a lab course
