SMGT

The Recreation Program at Chicago State University serves an urban community traditionally underrepresented in parks, recreation, and the leisure profession. The Recreation Program provides quality undergraduate education and collaborates with a wide variety of recreation and leisure providers within the Chicago Metropolitan Area. The Recreation Program curriculum follows the Academic Curriculum Standards as created by the Council on Accreditation, Professions and Related Tourism (COAPRT). COAPRT accredits baccalaureate programs in parks, recreation, tourism, sport management, event management, therapeutic recreation, and leisure studies offered at regionally accredited instituions within the United States and its territories, and at nationally accredited institutions in Canada and Mexico.

The Sports Management emphasis area prepares students for multiple opportunities in the Athletics profession. SMGT prepares graduates for leadership in supervisory and administrative positions in the sports industry, athletics, park and recreation departments, youth and community agencies, commercial recreation, fitness and health facilities, resort areas, campus recreation, and armed forces/military. Upon completion of a recreation degree from the CSU accredited program, students qualify to pursue certification as a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) via a national examination by the National Parks and Recreation Association (www.nrpa.org).

General Requirements


The Sports Management (SMGT) emphasis area prepares students for multiple opportunities in the Athletics profession. Admission Requirements:


General admission is granted three times a year for fall, summer and spring semester. Undergraduate admission applications can be submitted online via the Chicago State University website, www.csu.edu. New incoming first-time freshmen can also submit an application via Common App, www.commonapp.org. Paper applications are no longer accepted.  Applicants are encouraged to complete the application by the priority review dates for an early decision and merit scholarship opportunities.

General Requirements (24 credit hrs)

  • Humanities/Fine Arts (9 hrs); at least 3 hrs Humanities and 3 hrs Fine Arts
  • Social Sciences (9 hrs); in at least two different disciplines
  • Natural Sciences (6 hrs); 3 hrs Physical Science and 3 hrs Life Sciences, one of which must be a lab course

Students pursing the MBA + 1 should consult with an advisor and take 5000 level business classes. Other students may wish to choose from the suggested CMAT classes or speak to an advisor.
