Africana Studies Minor

The Department of Geography, Sociology, History, Africana Studies, and Anthropology offers an 18-hour minor in Africana Studies, with the 18 credit hours to be selected with the approval of the Africana Studies Program advisor. The requirements for the minor must be completed prior to graduation in order for the minor to appear on the transcript.

Minor Requirements (12 credit hours)

AFAM 1000 - Introduction to African American Studies Credit Hours: 3
AFAM 3010 - African American Studies Research Credit Hours: 3
HIST 2720 - AFAM Hist to 1865 Credit Hours: 3
or
HIST 2730 - AF AM Hist Since 1865 Credit Hours: 3
HIST 2840 - Africa to 1800 Credit Hours: 3
or
HIST 2850 - Africa Since 1800 Credit Hours: 3

Minor Electives (6 credit hours)

Six credit hours of Africana-themed course selected from AREA 1 or AREA 2 in “Liberal Arts in Africana Studies Option.”

Students may select additional Africana-themed courses in other arts and humanities disciplines after consultation with the program’s academic advisor.
