Elementary Education Licensure, B.S.

University General Education Requirements  

Content Designation:

ELED

Completion of the Elementary Education program qualifies students for the Illinois Professional Educator Licensure (PEL) in Elementary Education (Grades 1-6). The Elementary Education licensure and non-teaching option programs follow the standards of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI), content specialized standards, and meet Illinois State Board of Education standards in elementary education.

Elementary Education General Requirements

Students are responsible for meeting the program and College requirements in effect at the time they officially register in a teacher education program leading to licensure at Chicago State University, regardless of when they were admitted to the university.

Admission to the program is contingent upon good academic standing and acceptance by the department.

Admission to the College of Education is required prior to registration in any professional education courses other than ED 1520 , ED 2000 , ED 4312 ; ELED 3010 ; P E 2040 ; PSYC 2020 ; S ED 4301 ; and READ 3700 .

All student teachers will demonstrate they have met the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards, including mastery of the content knowledge as evidenced by a passing score on the Illinois Licensure Testing System content area test in Elementary Education. Candidates for licensure must also successfully complete the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) professional portfolio by the National Board for Professional Teachers. Candidates for licensure must submit proof of passing the ICTS content area licensure test in elementary education to the Office of Field Placement before they will be allowed to apply to enroll in Student Teaching II.

All degree requirements must be completed within six years.

Degree Course Requirements


B.S. Elementary Education Licensure (121 credit hours)


University and Program General Education Courses (48 credit hours)


Area of Concentration (12 credit hours)


Elementary education majors must complete 12-hour concentration in one of the following disciplines approved by their advisor: anthropology, biological sciences, computer science; computer applications, cultural geography; economics; English and language arts; fine arts (art and/or music and/or theater only); general science; history; linguistics; literacy and reading; mathematics; philosophy; physical sciences; political science; psychology; social studies; sociology; Spanish. Except for mathematics, nine credit hours must be in upper division courses. Minimum GPA of 2.5 required in area of concentration.

Professional Education (58 credit hours)


The courses must be passed with at least a grade of C. Minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 required in Professional Education course work.

Some courses (designated with an asterisk) are restricted to students admitted to the College of Education.

Supportive Course (1 credit hour)

*If student has not successfully completed Illinois Licensure Content Area Test in Elementary/Middle Grades (K-9) he or she must take and pass ELED 3092 .

Additional Program Requirements


  • The courses must be passed with at least a grade of C. Students who receive any grade lower than C must retake the class. Students who earn two or more grades below a C must retake the courses and earn a C or better before continuing with other coursework. Students are allowed to retake classes in which they earned less than a C only once.
  • Minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 required in Professional Education course work.
  • Clinical experiences are required in methods courses, student teaching course, and other courses. Hours vary by course.
  • Completion of elementary education program assessment requirements, including a passing score on the student teacher edTPA professional portfolio.
  • All students enrolled in any education program are required to purchase LiveText®, a one time purchase of a commercial web-based technology package that provides an electronic storage for student’s professional portfolio, assessments, activities and projects for program coursework. Failure to post assignments on LiveText® will result in a grade of “Incomplete” for the course.

Elementary Education - Non-teaching Option


The Elementary Education, Non-teaching Option requires 30 hours of elective work in one or two approved sequences or strands (e.g. business technology, professional writing, etc.). Sequences are decided by the candidate with program approval. Total hours for graduation are 125 credit hours.
