General Requirements for Music Studies


Students must:

  • register and participate in MUSM 1800  during the fall and spring semesters while enrolled full or part-time time at the university.
  • register and participate in either the university concert band or jazz band if an instrumental major, or the concert choir if a vocal major, during the fall and spring semesters while enrolled full time at the university. Piano and guitar majors may choose between concert band, concert choir, or jazz band.
  • perform a senior recital, which must be a minimum of 25 minutes of music. Four weeks before the recital, the student must successfully complete a recital hearing for a minimum of two music faculty.
  • pass an exit piano proficiency examination before graduation
  • complete 120 credit hours: 39 combined credit hours in general education, 50 credit hours in music specialization, and 31 credit hours in electives.

General Education: (39 combined hours)


Core Requirements (12 credits)

  • Six (6) Credits of English Composition
  • Three (3) Credits of Oral Communication
  • Three (3) Credits of Mathematics
General Requirements (24 credits)

  • Nine (9) Credits of Humanities/Fine Arts; at least 3 credits of humanities and 3 credits of fine arts
  • Nine (9) Credits of Social Sciences; in at least two disciplines
  • Three (3) Credits of Life Science and Three (3) Credits of Physical Science; one of which must have a lab
Total = 36 credit hours

College of Arts and Sciences Requirement (3 credits)

  • Three (3) Credits of a Foreign Language
  • One general education or major course carrying the diversity designation (embedded)

Music Specialization (50 hours)


Applied Major

12 hours from MUSA: a minimum of 4 semesters (8 credit hours) of applied lessons at the 1000 level and a minimum of 2 semesters (4 credit hours) of applied lessons at the 2000 level. The student must successfully complete a proficiency hearing to advance to the 2000 level of applied lessons.
Large Ensemble

8 credit hours of
Small Ensemble

  • 2 credit hours of MUSE, chosen from the small ensemble list
Performance Class

  • MUSM 1800  every semester of full-time or part-time enrollment
Senior Recital

  • MUSM 4800  fulfills the senior thesis/capstone requirement

Open Elective Hours: (31 hours)


  • Students may select elective courses from across the university with approval from the department.

General Requirements for the concentration in Gospel Music


Students must:

  • register and participate in MUSM 1800  during the fall and spring semesters while enrolled full or part-time at the university.
  • register and participate in the gospel choir or large ensemble during the fall and spring semesters while enrolled full time at the university.
  • perform a senior recital, which must be a minimum of 25 minutes of music. Four weeks before the recital, the student must successfully complete a recital hearing for a minimum of two music faculty.
  • pass an exit piano proficiency examination before graduation
  • complete 120 credit hours: 39 combined credit hours in general education, 56 credit hours in music specialization, and 25 credit hours in electives.

  • register and participate in the music production group during the fall and spring semesters while enrolled full time at the university.
  • present a senior recital, which must be a minimum of 25 minutes of music. Four weeks before the recital, the student must successfully complete a recital hearing for a minimum of two music faculty.
  • pass an exit piano proficiency examination before graduation
  • complete 120 credit hours: 39 credit hours in combined general education, 54 credit hours in music specialization, and 27 credit hours in electives.

General Requirements for Music Teacher Preparation, P-12 Option


Students must:

  • register and participate in MUSM 1800   during the fall and spring semesters while enrolled full or part-time at the university.
  • register and participate in either the university concert band if an instrumental major, or the concert choir if a vocal major, during the fall and spring semesters while enrolled full time at the university. Piano and guitar majors may choose between concert band or concert choir.
  • perform a senior recital, which must be a minimum of 25 minutes of music. Four weeks before the recital, the student must successfully complete a recital hearing for a minimum of two music faculty.
  • pass an exit piano proficiency examination before student teaching.
  • a grade of C or above is required in all general education, professional education and music courses, either as transfer credit or completed at Chicago State University. A grade of B or above is required in student teaching.
  • a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all program course work, either as transfer credit or completed at Chicago State University, is required for admission to the College of Education.
  • enrollment in Student Teaching (MUSM 4076  ) requires successful completion of the Music Licensure Content Area Test (P-12). The final grade for Student Teaching requires successful completion of the edTPA.
  • complete 128 credit hours: 39 combined credit hours in general education, 61 credit hours in music specialization, and 28 credit hours/100 field hours in professional education.

Honors Program in Music


Admission requirements

  • 3.25 GPA or higher in music.
  • 3.0 GPA or higher overall.
  • Completion of MUSM 1112 , MUSM 1116 , and MUSM 3020 .
  • Completion of honors application approved by the faculty mentor and department chair.

Program Requirements

Honors Classes

The designated honors classes will be offered in conjunction with existing courses. Honors students who have been accepted in the Honors Program in Music will be given additional reading and assignments in these classes
