University General Education Requirements
General Requirements
Admission to the program is contingent upon completion of CPTR 1100 and CPTR 2100 , a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher, and acceptance by the department. The department will not accept D grades in any required major courses or required supportive courses, either as transfer credit or completed at Chicago State University.
Requirements include completion of 120 semester hours, including 36 hours in general education; College of Arts and Sciences requirement of 3 hrs of a foreign language and an embedded requirement of one general education or major course carrying the diversity designation (refer to the College of Arts and Sciences General Education Requirements ; note that the 3 credit hours reflect the University General Education requirements); 34 hours in computer science; 20-21 hours in required supportive courses; an honors thesis; and elective courses. By demonstrating proficiency, a student may be able to obtain credit for certain mathematics and computer science courses at the recommendation of the department.

Specific General Education Requirements
General Education (36 credit hours)
9 hours in fine arts or humanities, 3 hours in oral communication, the major satisfies the 3 hours in mathematics; 3 hours in biological sciences and 3 hours in physical sciences with one having a laboratory component, and 6 hours in composition. In addition, the nine hours in social sciences must be chosen from the following: University General Education Requirement (36 credit hrs)
Core requirements
- English composition (6 hrs)
- Oral communication (3 hrs): CMAT 1130
- Mathematics (3 hrs)
General requirements
- Humanities/Fine Arts (9 hrs); at least 3 hr Humanities and 3 hr Fine Arts
- Social Sciences (9 hrs); in at least two different disciplines
- Natural Sciences (6 hrs); 3 hr Physical Science and 3 hr Life Sciences, one of which must be a lab course
Note that the General Education requirement for Mathematics (3 hr) is embedded in the supportive courses for the Major (see below*).
College of Arts and Sciences Requirement (3 credit hr)
- One course in a Foreign Language (3 hr)
- One general education or major course carrying the diversity designation
Specific Requirements for the BS Degree Required Courses (37 credit hours)
- fulfills the capstone project requirement
Required Supportive Courses (20-21 credit hours)
Elective Courses (23-24 credit hours)
Electives must be selected from CPTR or MATH with the departmental advisor’s approval. Courses in other disciplines can be taken with the approval of the Chair. Computer Engineering Concentration
