Interim Department Chairperson: Mark Smith

The Department of Computing, Information and Mathematical Sciences, and Technology (CIMST), offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and a minor sequence in computer science for students majoring in other fields. Required courses include courses in programming, database, software engineering, and communications and networks. Students can take a limited number of graduate courses in artificial Intelligence (AI), databases, network security, data science and other areas to enhance their specialty.

Students may choose to concentrate in computer engineering. Computer Science majors are encouraged to earn a minor in mathematics, Information Technology (ITC), or Security and Intelligence Studies (SIS). In addition, majors should seriously consider earning various industrial certificates and doing internships. The Department, supported by its Amazon, Cisco, and CompTIA academies, offers IT courses which will prepare students for various industrial certificates such as CCNA, A+, Network+, Security+, AWS Cloud Foundation Practitioner, etc.

Students obtaining this degree will be prepared for positions in private industry or government or to pursue an advanced degree in their area of specialization. Minoring and certifications will better the employment prospects.

All entering freshmen and transfer students who intend to major in computer science are required to take the university placement examination in mathematics. These students may not register for any mathematics or computer science course until they have taken the examination. This examination is designed to place students into the appropriate mathematics course from basic mathematics to calculus.
