INTRODUCTION TO MODERN ALGEBRA I (3)Basic properties of groups, order, cyclic groups and their structure theorems. Normal subgroups, cosets and Lagrange’s theorem, group homomorphisms, factor groups, direct products, and the isomorphism theorems; permutation groups. Basic properties of rings, integral domains, fields, ideals, ring homomorphisms; polynomial and power series rings.Prerequisites: MATH 1420/262, MATH 2200/201 and MATH 2300/230.
